Senior and Assisted Living Communities

Yoga is considered, by many, to be a tremendous tool for combating the concerns of an aging society.

There are three key components to a productive Yoga Class for Seniors:

low impact cardio, resistance training, and stretching. FitMind and Body instructors provide a Yoga class that integrates all three of these bases. Yoga classes include stretching and gentle movements, suitable for a mat or chair, along with Mindful Breathing and Guided Meditation. Yoga instructors are also Reiki certified, ensuring a calm, relaxed environment.

The many benefits of Yoga have long been said to slow – or even slowly reverse – the aging process. FitMind and Body instructors promote Mindful Breathing in each practice…as we stop breathing fully as we age. Yoga reminds us that it is important to exhale as fully as we inhale. As we grow older, we lose flexibility in our ribcage. This may contribute to spinal deformities, creating less room for lung expansion. Mindful breathing takes into consideration the three purposes of breathing: replenishing, warming, and cleansing. Focusing on full inhalations and exhalations serves to slow down the heart rate which, in turn, improves focus and increases concentration.

Yoga has a number of benefits for people over 50, from healthy bones to flexibility to anxiety relief. Niney-four-year-old Tao Porchon-Lynch swears by yoga as a way to maintain a positive attitude, relieve stress and age gracefully.
